CHRISTINE KELLETT

December 10, 2009

An elderly man who lost his life on a birthday skydive this morning "died with a smile on his face," investigators say.

The Surfers Paradise man had treated himself to the tandem thrill experience to celebrate his 70th birthday but lost consciousness shortly after leaping out of the two-seater plane, 10,000 feet above the Gold Coast.

He died on North Kirra Beach in front of his family - who had gathered to watch him jump - after attempts to revive him failed.

Police said it was likely the man had passed away as a result of a heart attack, however industry regulator the Parachuting Federation of Australia is investigating the incident and is due to prepare a report.

National Director of Safety Paul Osborne said the man had filled in a medical declaration form which did not detail any pre-existing health complaints and he was cleared as fit to jump.

The man, who was born in New Zealand, had embarked on the tandem skydive with Gold Coast Skydive's chief instructor Robbie McMillan at 10am following 10 minutes of instruction.

"It wasn't a foreseen thing. He just slowly lost consciousness under canopy [after the parachute had opened]" Mr Osborne said.

"By all accounts, he seemed to be very happy with the jump. He was enjoying himself and had a big smile on his face."

Mr Osborne said it was "not unusual for people to pass out" on skydives, especially when they were new at it.

He described the man's death as "a tragedy."

"People do lose conscious under canopy. It's a rare occurrence but it does happen.

"We don't really know what causes it. People become overwhelmed because it is a very, very big rush.

"Skydiving is something that increases the heart rate dramatically. It's the biggest thrill you can experience.

"We have had medical incidents occur in the past with experienced divers and non-experienced divers, but it is very uncommon."

Mr McMillan was said to be "extremely upset" by the incident and counselling had been offered for at Gold Coast Skydive staff.

"The company is also working quite closely with the family," Mr Osborne said.

The plane took off from Coolangatta airport about 10am with just Mr McMillan, the man and the pilot aboard.

From a height of 10,000 feet, it would have taken up to five minutes for the tandem pair to reach the ground before the man could be given CPR.

The industry does not set a maximum age limit, but does make jumpers sign a medical waiver before taking part.

As a first-time jumper, the man would have received 10 minutes' instruction ahead of the jump.

As an instructor, Mr McMillan is required to complete 500 jumps and hold an instructors license before taking out thrill seekers.

Meet 'Aussie Karen' - the voice in your GPS

Ever wanted to put a face to the female voice in your GPS? Well now you can, as 'Aussie Karen' tells her story.

Looking out my window onto the crowded street below, I couldn't help daydreaming. I feel so at home here, I thought.

It was 2002 and I was living in New York. As a singer-songwriter from Mackay, Qld, I'd moved to the big smoke to chase my dream.

And although I wasn't yet performing at Madison Square Garden, I was slowly building a name for myself in clubs and venues.

Suddenly, my mobile phone interrupted my thoughts.

'I have an audition for you,' my Australian agent bellowed down the line. 'An American company is looking for a native Australian female voice-over artist who's now living in New York.'

'That's me,' I replied. As well as my singing background, I'd also had experience in voice-over work.

My agent explained that I would be the voice for some groundbreaking new technology that would be used in cars to help drivers with directions.

'The company wants a range of accents, including an Australian one,' she told me.

I scribbled down the address for the auditions and headed to the studio a few days later. Walking into the audition, I didn't feel nervous.

'Can you read these directions so we can get an idea of your voice's tone and pitch?' the man asked me.

Nodding, I read the information. 'At the next intersection, turn left,' I said.

'You've got the job,' he announced when I'd finished reading. 'Your voice will be Aussie Karen.'

'Great,' I replied, thrilled. The easiest gig ever!

The next week I started doing my recordings, still not knowing exactly how my voice was going to be used.

I spent the first day reciting the alphabet several different ways. The next day it was the numbers one to 1000.

To make sure my voice sounded fresh, I could only record for four hours a day. And although I wasn't singing, I still enjoyed being in a sound studio and using my voice.

Over the next three weeks I recorded a phone book worth of streets and towns, as well as strange words and phrases such as 'Recalculating' and 'You have reached your destination'.

On the final day of recording, I felt like I'd done a good job. But the technology wouldn't be available for a couple of years. So in the meantime, I focused on my music and kept singing and writing.

Then in 2005, I got a strange call from a friend in Australia.

'I bought a GPS for Christmas and the voice on it sounds like you,' she laughed.

'No way,' I gasped. 'That must have been what I recorded all those years ago.'

All of my recordings suddenly made sense. Aussie Karen was the GPS voice!

Over the next few months, I had an influx of calls from friends in Australia telling me I was in their car.

'I never realised that you had such a great sense of direction,' one joked.

Then my American friends told me that Aussie Karen was a setting on their GPS too! I had no idea how widespread it would be.

Today, the GPS is in cars all around the world - and Aussie Karen is the most popular voice setting.

It's been seven years since I recorded those directions, and in the meantime my singing career has really started to take off.

Recently, I was even lucky enough to sing with Norah Jones and Cyndi Lauper.

But I still love that people throughout the world get to listen to my voice in their car.

Hopefully one day, it will be my songs as well as my directions they hear.

Queensland's Chief Health Officer Dr Jeanette Young says she expects the second wave of the swine flu pandemic to hit the state in February or March next year.

She told a medical conference on the Gold Coast today the disease caused a thousand deaths in the northern hemisphere last week but Australia's risk is lower because the population is much smaller.

She says a new vaccine offers safe, effective protection but only 10 per cent of Queenslanders have been immunised so far.

"We know through a lot of extensive modelling that has been done that if we can get 40 per cent of the population immunised then we will significantly reduce the impact," Dr Young said.

"Otherwise we will see a very similar flu season to what we saw last year with about the same morbidity and the same admissions to hospitals and ICU."
